Do you love to listen to a great story on CD with your kids? We love to listen to audio books and now thanks to Maestro Classics through the Homeschool Crew we have tried Peter and the Wolf. Maestro takes a story and puts it to music using instruments to help tell it. They let you know at the beginning of the story what instrument represents what character for example the flute is the bird so everytime you hear the flute you will know the birds are there. You can also listen to the story without the words (my daughter did not like doing this, but some do).
Here are some of the sounds we heard in Peter and the Wolf.
- Flute – Bird
- Violin – Peter
- Bassoon – Duck
- French Horn – Wolf
- Clarinet – Cat
- Oboe – Grandfather
- Kettle Drums –Hunters
After an introduction that tells you about the characters you listen to a story for 25 minutes, I broke this down into two days so I could keep my 1st graders attention. You learn about the composers life, the music and much more, it is a very educational experience.
Peter and the Wolf has won 3 different awards.
1. Parents Choice Award
2. Nappa Gold Award
3. Dr. Toy Award for the top 10 best audio-video products
You get a booklet too with several activities, match the insturments, crosswords and many others that make great workbox activities. You can check out samples from Peter and the Wolf (and other titles) on Maestro Classics’ website.
