As a homeschooling mom and a LOVER of all things LeapFrog I was very excited to be trying the new app My Robot Friend. This app is for 9 and up is good on any iOS device, this in itself is refreshing, it seems most of the educational apps I find are for younger children and I’m now a mom of all tweens and teens so this was very nice. I do believe some younger children would still be able to do this app!
We do a workbox system where I fill my children’s buckets each day with activities and one of the tools we use quite a bit is the ipad. This app has made a great addition to that routine and I know when they are working on it, they are really learning. I LOVE that!
The kids start by putting their name in and picking a robot to be, they can even add their own picture if they want! You have to get your Robot Friend from point A to point B by telling him how to move along the squares. They can go in different directions, forward, backwards, and even through obstacles if you have special cards allowing you to. The child earns rewards along the way to help through their journey, things such as rocket launchers, coins, special cards and shields. This game gets HARDER as it goes, which is nice because many apps seem to be too easy. This one really challenges your child and helps them think out of the box. The video below gives you an idea on how it works!
You can also earn extra costumes and voices (over 180) along the way, my daughter LOVED this. There are 80 levels so your children will get your moneys worth for sure!
I think today our children are really struggling with critical thinking skills. Everything is so fast paced and there is SO much technology that thinks for them-this app is great is strenghtening their skills in problem soloving, logic, programming skills, and reasoning. It even includes math and spelling! This is a real good thing!
LeapFrog MyRobot Friend is available for $3.99 on iOS at the app store. There are no in-app purchases which is such a PLUS!
