Vocabulary Cartoons is such a fun book to learn vocabulary words. My son is LOVING this book so much, it is a book that has funny cartoons to teach words. You see the cartoon at the top and then it gives the word at the bottom, after six or so pages it gives your student a quiz on the words. Most vocab books we have used are dry and dull but not this one, even I have enjoyed going through it. I have been telling all my friends about this book, if you are looking for a way to get your kids excited about learning vocabulary you HAVE to try this book. I did 4 pages a day with my oldest(6th grade), this book is recommended for 3-6th grades. On the second day, he took the quiz. He is remembering the words everytime, I think their mnemonic method is very effective. This book retails for $12.95 and is available through New Monic Books here.
This is what the website says:
“Vocabulary Cartoons works on the principle of mnemonics. A mnemonic is a device that helps you remember something by associating what you are trying to remember with something you already know. A mnemonic device could be in many different forms like; rhymes, songs, pictures to name a few. For example, “Columbus sailed the ocean blue in fourteen hundred ninety-two” is a classic mnemonic rhyme which helps you remember when Columbus discovered America.
Following the mnemonic principle of association, Vocabulary Cartoons link together an auditory (rhyming) word association and a visual association in the form of a humorous cartoon. These powerful mnemonics help students retain the meanings of words longer and with less effort than trying to memorize definitions straight out of a dictionary.”
